What Is Drop Weight?
If you’ve ever shopped for a baseball bat, you’ve likely seen something like “-10” or “-5” in the bat’s description. That number is called the drop weight, and it’s one of the most important specs when choosing a bat for your growing player.
Drop Weight = Bat Length (inches) – Bat Weight (oz)
So a 30" bat that weighs 20 oz has a drop of -10.
Why Does Drop Weight Matter?
- How heavy the bat feels
- How fast your kid can swing
- Whether it’s legal for their league
- How easy it is to control
The higher the drop (e.g., -12), the lighter the bat. The lower the drop (e.g., -5), the heavier. Younger players need lighter bats to build confidence and avoid injury, while older kids move toward heavier bats for power and league compliance.
